Knowledge. Leadership. Action.

Our Vision: Albertans work and play hard, free from life-limiting injuries.

Our Mission: The Injury Prevention Centre will lead the reduction of catastrophic injuries and deaths in Alberta. We will be a catalyst for action by supporting communities and decision-makers with knowledge and tools. We will raise the profile of preventing injuries as an important component of life-long health and wellness.

Our Priorities:

  • Reduce the incidence and severity of unintentional poisoning among children ages 0-9 years old.
  • Reduce the incidence and severity of falls among older adults (65+ years of age).
  • Promote agricultural safety to reduce the rate of deaths and serious injury in the farming population.
  • Address emerging injury issues with consideration of the unique Alberta context.

Creating a Downward Trend

Downward Injury Trend Graph

The Injury Prevention Centre has spent more than 20 years creating a downward trend in hospital admissions and death due to injury. These results are possible due to the collective impact of collaborative initiatives across the province.

From the smoke detectors in your home to the steel toe-caps in your work boots, prevention programs and policies have time and again proven to be effective lifesavers in every facet of society when carefully studied, developed, and implemented.

Injury death rate has fallen from 49.5 per 100,000 population in 1998 to 45.2 per 100,000 population in 2010. A similar trend is evident with injury hospital admissions, from 1,919.8 per 100,000 population in 1998 to 1,583.2 per 100,000 in 2013.

Research, Consultation, and Collaboration

The Injury Prevention Centre uses the most current data available to identify which injuries need to be addressed. Our programs and campaigns are then developed with the latest evidence-based research to produce most effective solutions to reducing injury.

This can’t be done without consultation and collaboration with practitioners, community partners, and Albertans.

Positioned for Success

With our team of researchers, data analysts, program coordinators, educators and communicators we have the unique opportunity to develop and implement effective injury prevention strategies. While supporting practitioners and community partners, as we’ve always done, there is emerging dialogue directly between the Centre and Albertans.

The Centre is part of the School of Public Health, University of Alberta and reports operationally to the Dean of the School. IPC is publicly funded through a grant from Alberta Health and is accountable to the citizens of Alberta.

We have established a collaborative working relationship with the AHS – Injury Prevention Program (AHS-IPP) to reduce duplication and maximize the use of resources.
