Prescription 4 Safety (P4S) is a set of easy-to-understand resources designed for professionals who work with families, such as doctors, nurses, teachers, social workers, and childcare providers to start conversations with parents and caregivers about preventing childhood injuries.

P4S provides key safety messages for three age groups: birth to one year, one to four years, and five to nine years. The resources guide users to more detailed information, for further learning.

Why is Prescription 4 Safety important?

Injuries are one of the leading causes of harm to young children, and Prescription 4 Safety (P4S) helps prevent these by providing simple, clear information. Many families may not always have access to in-depth injury prevention resources, especially those who don’t attend regular health visits or Well Child Clinics. P4S fills this gap by offering a tool that can be used in various places, such as hospitals, schools, daycare centers, and newcomer agencies, making injury prevention messages accessible to more families.

The goal of P4S is to spark important conversations about safety and direct parents to additional resources for further learning

“Childhood injuries are not just an unfortunate occurrence—they are preventable, and we must focus on education and awareness to reduce the risks.”

Who is Prescription 4 Safety for?

P4S is designed for professionals who work with parents and caregivers, especially those who may not have easy access to traditional injury prevention resources. This includes healthcare providers (like pediatricians, nurses, and dentists), teachers, social workers, and community members such as  community health representatives and settlement workers.

How is Prescription 4 Safety used?

Using the information sheets with key messages and images, professionals can guide discussions with parents about childhood safety. Professionals can direct parents to other helpful resources, provided by Alberta Health Services, Health Canada, Parachute and other trusted sources of information through QR codes or web links. This makes PS4 a flexible tool that can be used in many settings, from hospitals to schools, to ensure all families have access to important injury prevention messages.
