Poison Prevention in Action

Poison Prevention in Action (PPIA) raises the awareness of the issue of unintentional poisoning and provides Albertans with actions they can take to prevent poisoning. Every year for National Poison Prevention Week in March, IPC along with a variety of partners and community promoters highlight poison prevention issues that impact families and provide key messages to prevent poisoning. To support the campaign, an extensive toolkit is created containing posters, engagement activities, infographics, etc. These resources are available to order free of charge or to download. While the resources are created for National Poison Prevention Week, they are not dated and can be used throughout the year.

Why is Poison Prevention in Action important?

Poisoning is a leading cause of injury to Albertans and leads to over 25,000 calls to the Poison and Drug Information Service every year. Many poisons are present in our homes, workplaces, garages and yards. While these products have their uses, it is important that people realize that they can be dangerous if mishandled or accessed by children, or confused with other substances. Poison prevention initiatives are developed and implemented based on data, evidence, and expertise of Toxicovigilance Canada and community partners.

The program strives to inform Albertans about the poisoning issues that matter to them and provide them with the knowledge and tools to prevent poisoning.

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
