IPC at a glance.

The Injury Prevention Centre (IPC) has been the leader in injury prevention in Alberta for almost 30 years. Working in partnership with organizations, communities, and individuals, we initiate and implement evidence-informed initiatives, programs, and advocacy efforts. By focusing on preventing injuries, we save lives and keep Albertans out of emergency rooms and hospital beds. We work as connectors, providers, and leaders committed to our vision of ensuring that “Albertans work and play hard, free from life-limiting injuries.”

Our history.

Established in 1998 as the Alberta Centre for Injury Control & Research (ACICR), the Injury Prevention Centre (IPC) is the oldest injury prevention centre in Canada. Over the past 30 years, Alberta has seen a significant decrease in the injury-related hospital admission rate of 0.4% each year. While this is good news, injury remains the leading cause of death for Albertans aged 10 to 49 years and impacts the Alberta economy with a cost of over $7 billion annually, about $5 billion being direct medical costs.

A message from our Director.

My journey to injury prevention is very personal; I sustained a life altering injury at the age of 18 that left me physically disabled. This experience gave me a deep understanding of the impact preventable injuries have on individuals, families, communities and ultimately society. It also cemented my belief in the need for injury prevention. The Centre works across Alberta to empower Albertans to prevent injuries through surveillance, program support, knowledge synthesis and translation, and education and information sharing. While we have made tremendous strides in reducing preventable injuries, injuries still remain a leading cause of death and disability for Albertans.
