Finding Balance is an education program and public awareness campaign designed to educate and empower older Albertans to stay independent and prevent falls.

Falls are the leading cause of injury among seniors. As we get older, our bodies naturally change, which affects how we feel, move, and behave. This makes the risk of falling higher. A fall can result in serious injuries, like broken bones or chronic pain, which can make it harder to do everyday activities. Even if you don’t get hurt, a fall can lead to a loss of confidence and cause you to avoid being active. Staying safe and preventing falls is important for keeping independence and enjoying life as we age. Finding Balance helps to reduce the risk of falls and keeps seniors healthy, active, and confident.

Why is Finding Balance important?

Falls are not only a health risk but also a major cause of injury for older adults. As we age, the risk of falling increases due to changes in our body, such as decreased strength and balance.

A fall can have serious consequences, such as fractures, hospital stays, or chronic pain that affects daily life. Even without injury, falling can make seniors feel anxious or fearful about moving around, which can lead to avoiding important activities.

Finding Balance helps to reduce these risks and allows seniors to feel confident and safe in their everyday lives. It promotes the importance of staying active and independent while preventing falls before they happen.

“The key to healthy aging is to maintain your physical and mental health, stay active, and challenge your mind regularly.”

Who is Finding Balance for?

Finding Balance is for all seniors, especially those who are concerned about the risk of falling or have experienced a fall. Whether you’re looking to improve your balance, strengthen muscles, or learn more about how to stay safe in your environment, the Finding Balance program can help. It is designed for older Albertans and anyone who wants to prevent falls and stay independent for as long as possible.

How is Finding Balance used?

Finding Balance is an education and awareness program developed by the Injury Prevention Centre at the University of Alberta. The program includes resources, tools, and tips to help seniors prevent falls and stay active. It is supported by partnerships with senior groups, healthcare organizations, and professionals from across Alberta that promote fall prevention in their communities.

The Finding Balance campaign takes place every November as part of Seniors Falls Prevention Month, but the materials and information are available year-round. Through Finding Balance, seniors can learn simple steps to improve balance, strength, and safety, making it easier for them to remain independent and enjoy a higher quality of life.
