The School Physical Activity, Health & Education Resource for Safety (SPHEReS) is a web-based resource IPC developed to provide teachers, school staff, and administrators with safety guidelines related to physical activity.

The myspheres.ca website is a compilation of safety-related policies and principles that teachers and schools can use to build safety and injury prevention into physical activities.

When students are active, they learn valuable life skills and improve their health. SPHEReS helps make sure that every child can enjoy physical activity safely. By using the guidelines, teachers and school staff can provide an environment where students thrive without unnecessary risks.

Explore the guidelines at myspheres.ca and start making your school a safer place for physical activity today!

Why is SPHEReS important?

Injury is the leading cause of death and disability to youth ages 10 to 24 in Alberta. Fifty percent of school-aged children and youth injuries occur while participating in physical activity. And so, schools are an important place for establishing safe behaviours in children and youth.

The goal of this resource is to ultimately decrease injuries resulting from curriculum-based physical activity and interschool athletics (including recess, field trips, etc.) by providing guidelines to help minimize the risk of injuries so that students can still enjoy all the physical activities offered at school, such as phys-ed class, recess, and after-school sports.

By following these guidelines, schools can create a safer environment for students to stay active and healthy.

Who is SPHEReS for?

SPHEReS is intended for teachers, school staff, coaches, and administrators in Alberta schools. However, if you are from another province or region, you are welcome to use the guidelines if your local guidelines are not available or do not cover certain activities. Keep in mind that while SPHEReS offers helpful resources, it is not a replacement for local laws, rules, or existing policies established by your school.

How is SPHEReS used?

The SPHEReS website is easy to navigate, and everything you need is organized in clear sections. Here's how you can use it:

  1. Browse Safety Guidelines:
The website has guidelines for a wide range of activities. Whether it's a PE class, intramural sports, or even just recess, you’ll find safety tips and rules to follow.
  2. Develop Safety Plans:
Schools can use these guidelines to create their own safety plans. Every school is different, so it's important to adjust the guidelines to fit your specific needs and circumstances.
  3. Update Your Knowledge:
SPHEReS replaces older safety guidelines, so be sure to use the most up-to-date information available. If you're already familiar with previous versions, it's important to check out the new guidelines for any updates.
  4. Implement in Your School:
Before implementing any safety guidelines, review them thoroughly to make sure they work for your school's activities and environment. Each school is unique, and these guidelines should be adjusted as needed to ensure maximum safety for all students.
